KARIEL’s sculpture Atlantis (2014) is a poetic study dealing with a phenomenon specific to the Klöntalsee reservoir: standing on solid ground at the beginning of the Triennale, the pyramidal construction will sink almost entirely under water as reservoir levels rise over the course of the summer. As such, the work addresses both local and global themes like human interventions in natural systems and the highly-debated issue of global climate change. But mythological themes and reminiscences of sunken civilizations also resonate in the work. The merging of mystical themes, alternative societies, and the visual language of modernism is a primary focus of KARIEL’s collaborative practice.
